Abstract: Enterococci bacteria that cannot be treated effectively with the antibiotic vancomycin are termed Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci (VRE). In this thesis, we develop a mathematical framework for determining optimal strategies for prevention and treatment of VRE in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). A system of five ordinary differential equations describes the movement of ICU patients in and out of different states related to VRE infection. Two control variables representing the prevention and treatment of VRE are incorporated into the system. An optimal control problem is formulated to minimize the VRE-related deaths and costs associated

Description:
Designed to provide tools for independent study, this book contains student-tested mathematical exercises joined with MATLAB programming exercises.
Most chapters open with a review followed by theoretical and programming exercises, with detailed solutions provided for all problems including programs. Many of the MATLAB exercises are presented as Russian dolls: each question improves and completes the previous program and results are provided to validate the interme

Here we present the integration of a computationally oriented mathematics education into the CDIO-based MSc program in mechanical engineering at Chalmers. The process for integration of mathematics into the curriculum is described together with the outline of the reformed education and the courses. Further, the impact and outcome as well as in what way the reformed education is better are discussed and success factors are identified Finally, we discuss next step in the development which includes computerized student training, teaching as well as computerized grading and assessment. For this we will use a virtual learning environment.
